Transformers

AltaSim guides engineers through multiphysics simulations so they can bring their products to market more rapidly, at a lower cost and with an optimized design.  To help better understand what that looks like, we have put together a brief case study of how our simulation gurus provided a practical solution in a recent project.

Problem:

One of AltaSim’s clients designs and manufactures transformers, inductors and power supplies for industrial applications. The company has extensive experience in developing their products for military, electrostatic precipitators and oil & gas applications. Many of their products generate significant heat and their designs must incorporate exceptional thermal management to operate effectively. Our client developed a prototype transformer with the help of AltaSim Technologies. During the construction process, they needed to modify the design to improve manufacturability. The modified design did not pass thermal requirements. Our client was faced with a decision on how to move forward with their next prototype. Each prototype cost $100k and required three months to build and test. Additional prototypes would put the design project over budget and behind schedule.

Solution:

Our client leveraged AltaSim’s extensive expertise in developing multiphysics simulations related to the heating of transformers. They worked with us to modify the original simulations to incorporate the design change they had implemented; and they confirmed that the design change produced the elevated temperatures. AltaSim then modified the virtual prototype to show how possible design modifications could mitigate the heat transfer issues.

Results:

AltaSim identified the root cause of the heat transfer challenge in our client’s current design. We then tested design concepts to identify the optimal design. The project cost $12k and required three weeks. Our client saved months of prototype development time and several hundred thousand dollars in development costs.

In addition to developing simulations for our clients, AltaSim also trains engineers to develop simulations. For more information on our classes visit our calendar.

We limit our classes to eight (8) students to maximize the attention each student receives. Click here for more information about our class in the electromagnetic simulation in the radio frequency and wave optics regime.
