Radio Frequency Heart Catheter

With our guidance for implementing multiphysics simulations, engineers who work with AltaSim Technologies bring their products to market more rapidly, at a lower cost, and with an optimized design. To help see how working with AltaSim impacts our clients, we have put together a brief case study of how our simulation experts provided a unique solution in a recent project.

Problem:

A client of AltaSim’s was developing a new heart catheter device to treat atrial fibrillation. The device uses many electrodes to ablate tissue through heat using high frequency electromagnetic energy (i.e., RF ablation), and uses flowing saline to couple the electrodes to the cardiac tissue. The combination of electromagnetics, fluid flow, and tissue heating produced a coupled multiphysics challenge. Engineers working for our client were frustrated in their efforts to design the device through hand calculations and experiments, and they were unable to develop a device design to submit for FDA approval.

Solution:

Our client came to AltaSim for our extensive expertise in developing tissue ablation simulations in COMSOL Multiphysics. AltaSim developed simulations of the catheter that included tissue heating due to electromagnetic energy. After adding in the heat transfer effects of the flowing saline, AltaSim was able to reproduce the experimental data developed by our client. The team was then able to modify the operating conditions of the device in the simulation to produce the desired ablation characteristics.

Results:

Through working with AltaSim, our client was able to develop a more complete understanding of how their device operated. This knowledge enabled their engineers to develop prototypes that ablated cardiac tissue in desired patterns. Our client invested $30,000 to develop these simulations and received FDA approval for their heart catheter.  Subsequently, our client sold their company for over $200 million.

AltaSim teams up with companies to provide simulations that increase the knowledge and understanding of our clients’ engineering staff. Through these simulations, AltaSim works with our clients to develop actionable plans to solve their engineering challenges.
