CFD: Single Phase Flow in COMSOL Multiphysics

There is no reason to learn software programs through trial and error. Even though you may be capable of teaching yourself a new software program, it is a large time commitment and a less efficient way to learn tried and tested methods quickly. Objectives of this Training Class

This course provides an introduction to solving computational fluid dynamics (CFD) problems with single-phase flow using COMSOL Multiphysics.  The course covers:

  • Laminar and turbulent flow using finite element analysis
  • The governing equations of mass, momentum and energy
  • Flow for Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids
  • Meshing requirements
  • Solver selection for complex flow conditions

Participants are expected to have a working knowledge of COMSOL Multiphysics before attending.

Course Content

Days 1 & 2, 12:30pm - 5:00pm

Attendees with be led through the use of COMSOL Multiphysics to perform analysis of single-phase flow phenomena.  The following items will be covered:

  • Fundamental principles governing CFD analysis
  • Set up of CFD analyses in COMSOL
  • Analysis of laminar and turbulent flow in fluids
  • Selection of relevant boundary conditions
  • Selection of solver settings and parameters to obtain a converged solution
Days 3 & 4, 12:30pm - 5:00pm

These sessions will focus on specialized applications of CFD analysis using COMSOL Multiphysics.  The following specialized flow conditions will be examined:

  • Compressible flow
  • Flow in porous media
  • Stokes flow
  • Thin film flow
  • Rotating machinery
  • Microfluidics

Who should attend

This course is intended for people who wish to analyze single phase flow behavior using COMSOL Multiphysics. It is expected that attendees will have an existing knowledge of the structure of COMSOL Multiphysics and will possess a relevant engineering, physics, mathematics or science background.

Luke Gritter

Luke has more than ten years experience in multiphysics analysis and specializes in analysis of problems relating to fluid flow, thermal, electro-magnetic, plasma and acoustic phenomena. As a Principal Engineer at AltaSim he has been instrumental in the development and application of multiphysics analysis to real world problems in the Medical Products, Consumer Products, Semiconductor Devices and Energy markets.

Josh Thomas

With more than nine years of computational analysis experience, Josh has a graduate level training in computational mechanics modeling specializing in microstructural analysis. As a Senior Engineer at AltaSim, he plays a vital role in developing solutions to a wide range of multiphysics problems using COMSOL. He has been integral to the development and teaching of both COMSOL Multiphysics and SpaceClaim courses at AltaSim.

Cancellation Policy

Please note that your seat in the course can not be confirmed until payment or a formal purchase order have been received. Instructor-led training tuition is fully refundable if we receive written notification (via mail or e-mail) of cancellation on or before seven business days prior to the class. Cancellations made less than seven business days prior to class will be charged 50 percent of the course tuition fee. If you fail to show up to class without written notice, you will be charged the full tuition. You may send a substitute in your place to avoid a fee.
