Problem:
Our client was developing an innovative smelting technique utilizing electric currents to heat the ore. The engineer faced convergence issues within the model due to strong nonlinear coupling of multiple physics domains, including heat transfer, electric currents, solid mechanics, and phase change within the model. The integration resulted in significant nonlinearity in the numerical solution and thus the inability to achieve convergence. The client created models in two- and three-dimensions; with the tree-dimensional models requiring several days to reach a non-converged solution.
Solution:
AltaSim partnered with our client to determine the required numerical methodologies for achieving a converged solution. Our team efficiently applied these methodologies using COMSOL Multiphysics®. The adjustments resulted in swift convergence in both two- and three-dimensional analyses.
Results:
Within two weeks we provided our client with simulations that converged for a wide range of operating conditions. For an investment of $10,000, our client got their development project back on tract, after being stuck for several months.
