Problem:
A client of AltaSim’s was developing a pump design for molten salt. Molten salt provides an excellent energy source capacity for solar power plants and must be able to generate power without sunlight. The pump uses electromagnetic fields to flow the molten salt through a piping system, which is then heated and stored in containers when energy demands are low. Our client’s engineer team spent six months trying to develop simulations to create a pump that used less power, and ended up frustrated that their current design did not meet their energy requirements. This combination of electromagnetics, heat transfer, and fluid flow produced a coupled Multiphysics challenge.
Solution:
Our client came to us for our extensive expertise in developing coupled electromagnetic and fluid flow simulations using COMSOL Multiphysics. AltaSim developed simulations of the current pump design that reproduced the experimental data developed by our client. Our team transferred the simulation files to our client’s engineers and trained them how to use these simulations.
Results:
Through working with AltaSim, our client was able to develop new simulations and test new design concepts with confidence. They are now able to move forward with assurance that testing of a new prototype will demonstrate the lower energy usage calculated by the simulations. After three months developing these simulations and an investment by our client of $60,000, our client is now moving forward with new designs.
