Problem:

The engineering group of one of our clients was working in the early design stage for a new geothermal energy plant and they wanted to, within three months, explore the design space using COMSOL Multiphysics®. However, limited simulation experience and no experience with COMSOL Multiphysics®, prevented the engineering group from calculating the fluid flow and heat transfer of water in a piping system, including phase transformation, and determining the electrical energy that could be produced.

Solution:

Our team applied our fluid flow and heat transfer experience and used COMSOL Multiphysics® to incorporate all the physics of interest to our client. We also provided training on how to modify input parameters and simulate new design cases.

Results:

We empowered our client’s engineers to test their design concepts via simulation within the three-month timeframe. Their engineers explored a wide range of design concepts and selected a unique design to maximize geothermal energy output for specific geological conditions.
