Electronics Cooling and Processor Placement

AltaSim guides engineers through multiphysics simulations so they can bring their products to market more rapidly, at a lower cost and with an optimized design. To help better understand what that looks like, we have put together a brief case study of how our simulation gurus provided a practical solution in a recent project.

Problem:

One of AltaSim's recent clients develops electronics components with high-speed processors. They are developing a new version of an existing product that has a smaller form factor. To accommodate this change in geometry, our client needed to move the processor to a new location within the component, that could reduce the air flow around the processor. This new concept had never been tested and our client was concerned that the lack of airflow could cause the chip to overheat.

To ensure the new design would work, our client faced the challenge of developing and testing a working prototype to determine the thermal performance. This process takes three months and costs $100,000's. Based on their previous experience working with AltaSim, the client realized that utilizing our expertise in simulations would reduce the time and cost.

Solution:

Our client leveraged AltaSim's extensive expertise in developing electronics cooling simulations to evaluate locations where their processor chip could be mounted. AltaSim developed the simulations to assess different processor locations within four weeks and for an investment of less than $20,000.

Results:

This approach enabled our client to assess multiple design options and identify the optimal location for thermal management. Our client assessed three designs in less time and cost than a single physical prototype.
