Sealing of Joint Connections

At AltaSim Technologies, we enable our clients' engineers to bring their products to market more efficiently, cost-effectively, and with optimized designs by guiding them through the implementation of multiphysics simulations. To showcase our impact, we present a case study of a unique solution developed by our simulation experts.

Problem:

An engineer for one of our clients needed to determine the feasibility of using a non-standard method for sealing a pipeline that transports extremely high-pressure and high-temperature materials. The potential of a leak in this system posed significant risks to employee safety, the profitability of the production facility, and the possibility of a facility shutdown.

Solution:

Leveraging our previous experience with standard sealing techniques for this pipeline, our team used COMSOL Multiphysics® to model a non-standard approach that encompassed all steps necessary for sealing the pipeline. It included connecting the tube ends and applying a bold load to the pipe flanges, and it accounted for extensive surface-to-surface contact and plasticity of the flange components.

Results:

We were able to compare the sealing conditions of this non-standard method with previous results from the standard technique, and analyze the similarities and differences between the two approaches. This provided our client's engineering team with the critical data and insights they needed to make a well-informed decision on how to proceed.
