Problem:

Undersea cables are essential for monitoring, communications, and exploration. The reliability of even the most advanced sensors is compromised if the fiber core is strained or distorted. Therefore, precise modeling of these stresses is crucial to ensuring robust and long-lasting systems.

A central question arises: In what ways do environmental pressures cause deformation of the fiber within undersea cables? Addressing this requires consideration of numerous variables, including hydrostatic and acoustic pressure, end-cap loading, and the structural complexity added by coatings and armor layers.

Solution:

A modular simulation platform was developed using multiphysics modeling to study fibers, coatings, and cable assemblies. All geometric and material parameters were adjustable, enabling analysis of pressure effects with or without end-cap loading, from single fibers to armored cables. The system supported rapid switching between configurations and robust sensitivity analysis for structural mechanics, acoustics, and fluid loading.

Results:

The simulation results offer valuable insights into factors affecting cable performance. Accurately representing end-loading conditions significantly impacts the internal response. These comprehensive findings provide designers with clear and practical guidelines for evaluating alternatives.
