Designing Air Filters through Multiphysics Simulations

Problem:

A leading manufacturer of in-home air filters sought to evaluate the true efficacy of new air filter designs. While many products in the market featured updated appearances, there was uncertainty about which design features provided genuine performance benefits. The company lacked the internal simulation expertise needed to assess airflow, particle removal, and clean air delivery rate (CADR) for different configurations and room environments. This gap limited their ability to make informed design decisions and optimize product development.

Solution:

To address this challenge, the company partnered with AltaSim Technologies, which specializes in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and particle tracing. AltaSim Technologies developed a detailed computational model of an air purifier in a standard room, building the geometry and finite element mesh, and implementing airflow, air age, and particle-tracing calculations. The model incorporated real device geometry, exhaust flow profiles, and sensor locations. Simulations were run for a range of scenarios, including different room sizes, air filter locations, and flow rates. For each scenario, the model provided outputs including air velocity, air age, particle decay rates, and CADR. This approach enabled rapid assessment of how design and placement choices affected air purification performance.

Results:

By working with AltaSim Technologies, the company gained a clear understanding of how different design and placement options impact the effectiveness of air purification. The simulation results enabled the team to make informed, data-driven decisions about product design and deployment. This approach provided valuable guidance for optimizing device performance and supported the development of more effective air filtration products.
