This course provides a comprehensive and unified introduction to multiphysics modeling and analysis using COMSOL Multiphysics. AltaSim’s instructors will draw on their experience as COMSOL Certified Consultants solving a wide range of problems on a daily basis to teach you the practical aspects of using COMSOL Multiphysics. This course will include how to set up, solve, submit/monitor analyses, and post process results to provide easy interpretation and viewing using COMSOL Multiphysics. The course leads you through all aspects of using COMSOL Multiphysics with a combination of presentations, demonstrations, workshops, one-on-one instruction and individual problems. At the end of each day participants will explore the use of COMSOL Multiphysics on predefined example problems, questions will be resolved on the following day. Practical demonstrations and workshops are integral to the training and are designed to reinforce the concepts and techniques presented in the lectures. Throughout the course you will have access to experienced engineers who can help set up problems of direct interest to you. The course emphasizes practical skills and techniques that are essential for multiphysics analysis reinforced by useful tips and insight from staff that use COMSOL Multiphysics on a daily basis. On completion you will be proficient in the skills to use COMSOL Multiphysics to set up, solve, troubleshoot and successfully analyze your own multiphysics problems.
Day 1, 9:00am – 5:00pm
An initial overview of the inherent methodologies applied to numerical analysis will be used as the basis for introducing the unique capabilities of COMSOL Multiphysics. The structure and functionality of the graphical user interface will be presented and participants guided through hands-on examples and demonstrations. At the end of Day 1 participants will have an understanding of the following items:
- Inherent methodology of linear and non-linear numerical analysis
- Capabilities of COMSOL Multiphysics
- Structure of graphical user interface
- How to build and set up a simple analysis
- Solution and post processing of analytical results
Day 2, 8:30am – 5:00pm
The second day will extend the initial understanding developed on Day 1 by discussing alternative ways to build geometries in COMSOL Multiphysics including best practices for including complex shapes. A detailed understanding of best approaches for problem set up, materials selection for single physics and multiphysics simulations will be developed using practical examples. At the end of Day 2 participants will have an understanding of the following items:
- The linear and non-linear finite element method
- The linear and non-linear systems solvers, what they do, and how best to use them
- Mechanisms for building and importing model geometries
- Best practices for dealing with complex geometric shapes
- Setting up the physics of a problem
- Multiphysics simulations
Day 3, 8:30am – 5:00pm
During Day 3 concepts and practices for mesh generation will be discussed including guidelines for mesh refinement and efficient problem solution in the presence of large gradients. The selection of the required problem type and appropriate solvers and solver settings to be used for various types of problems will be provided. These practices will be reinforced by worked examples and step-by-step tutorials. At the end of Day 3 participants will have an understanding of the following items:
- Different methods for mesh generation
- Approaches customized mesh generation and refinement
- Guidelines for mesh refinement required for various problems
- Selection of relevant problem type
- Solver configuration
- Customized solver set up
- Best practices for solver selection
Day 4, 8:30am – 5:00pm
The final session will provide a detailed examination of the options for post-processing results for visualization. Various methodologies for graphical and image output will be covered allowing the participant to produce results in a variety of different ways as required. Participants will work through several example problems of the different
approaches for post-processing. The final session will cover any specific issues raised by participants and allow one-on-one discussion of individual analyses of specific interest. At the end of Day 4 participants will have an understanding of the following items:
- Post processing of analysis results
- Viewing different plot representations of results
- Exporting images and tabular data
- Generation of animations
- Set-up, solution and analysis of specific problems of interest to the individual participant
- Multiphysics simulations

Kyle has over 25 years experience in computational analysis and has worked in developing and applying multiphysics analysis for the last 20 years. He specializes in analyses that incorporate structural, thermal, acoustic and vibration behavior. As a Principal of AltaSim he has been instrumental in the development and application of multiphysics analysis to real world problems in the Petrochemical, Aerospace, Medical Products and Energy markets.
Luke has over 10 years experience in multiphysics analysis and specializes in analysis of problems relating to fluid flow, thermal, electro-magnetic, plasma and acoustic phenomena. As a Research Engineer at AltaSim he has been instrumental in the development and application of multiphysics analysis to real world problems in the Medical Products, Consumer Products, Semiconductor Devices and Energy markets.
With over four years of computational analysis experience, Josh has a graduate level training in computational mechanics modeling specializing in microstructural analysis. As a Research Engineer at AltaSim, he plays a vital role in developing solutions to a wide range of multiphysics problems using COMSOL. He has been integral to the development and teaching of both COMSOL Multiphysics and SpaceClaim courses at AltaSim.
Sergei has over 30 years experience in computational analysis and specializes in analysis of problems relating to structural, piezo-electric, thermal, electro-magnetic, vibration, plasma and acoustic phenomena. As a Senior Engineer at AltaSim he has been instrumental in the development and application of multiphysics analysis to real world problems in the Automotive, Aerospace, Medical Products, Consumer Products, and Energy markets.
Who should attend
This course is ideal for people with little or no experience of COMSOL Multiphysics with an engineering, physics, mathematics or science background. No previous experience with COMSOL Multiphysics is required, but some basic knowledge of the scientific principles being applied is desirable.
It is recommended that each attendee bring a laptop with at least 2GB of RAM.

Training will take place between 9.00am and 5.00pm. Check-in is open from 8.30am on the first day; the final day will finish at ~3.00pm. Lunch and refreshments during the morning and afternoon sessions are provided.

Instructor-led training tuition is fully refundable if we receive written notification (via mail or e-mail) of cancellation on or before seven business days prior to the class. Cancellations made less than seven business days prior to class will be charged 50 percent of the course tuition fee. If you fail to show up to class without written notice, you will be charged the full tuition. You may send a substitute in your place to avoid a fee.
